Report: County Schools Nearly Last in Breakfast Participation

While participation by low-income students has risen, participation in Carroll County schools breakfast programs ranks second-to-last in Maryland.

Carroll County is second to last when it comes to the number of low-income students who were getting breakfast at school in the 2011-2012 school year, according to a recently released study. Less than 40 percent of students who participated in reduced lunches also participate in a breakfast program, according to Serving Maryland’s Children: Measuring Access to the School Breakfast Program, released by Maryland Hunger Solutions (MHS). MHS is an initiative of Food Research and Action Center, a nonprofit “working to improve public policies and public-private partnerships to eradicate hunger and undernutrition in the United States.”  In Maryland, for the first time, according to MHS, just over half of all low-income students are getting …

Special Education Group says 'Thanks'

The Special Education Citizen's Advisory Council honored teachers, therapists, administrators and more.

Teacher Appreciation Week begins today, but the Carroll County Public School System began thanking its staff last month at the Special Education Citizen’s Advisory Council’s Awards Night. Awards were given to teachers, speech pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other service providers, according to a statement from Carroll County Schools.  Beyond the classroom awards also recognized the role played by administrators, family members, community members, and students, “Who have truly gone to extraordinary efforts to contribute in a compassionate and caring way to the growth, happiness, and general well-being of children,” the statement read. Shockney and Meinecke Receive Outstanding Carroll County School Administrator Awards

The Rita Board Dowd Award for Outstanding Carroll County School Administrators was created in memory of Rita Board Dowd, who passed away in May 2009.

Nicholas Shockney, principal at Mechanicsville Elementary School, and Teresa Meinecke, assistant principal at Freedom Elementary School, have been named recipients of the Rita Board Dowd Award for Outstanding Carroll County School Administrators.  This award is given annually to two school administrators – one principal and one assistant principal (K-12) – awarded independently. The goal of the award is to recognize exceptional educational leadership in serving Carroll County Public Schools and its students, according to a news release.  Nicholas Shockney has 13 years in the field of education. He began his career as a first grade teacher in Anne Arundel County and came to Carroll County in 2002, where he was a first and fourth grade …

Are Carroll County High Schools Challenging?

When new rankings came out this week on the rigor of local high schools, reactions were mixed in Carroll County.

Five of Carroll County’s public high schools made the list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools, published annually by the Washington Post. The schools, Liberty, Century, Winters Mill, South Carroll and North Carroll, were ranked based on the number of college-level tests given at the school in 2012 divided by the number of graduates that year, the Post said. Teen Charged in West Middle School Bomb Threat Incident (Updated)

"The threat has since been determined to be a hoax and students have returned to class at this time." - Sheriff's Department news release

This story was updated at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday. A 13-year-old female is accused of making a false threat Tuesday to bomb West Middle School, Carroll County Sheriff's officials said in a release. According to a Sheriff's Department news release, just after 11 a.m. school officials reported finding an anonymous, non-specific written threat to the school building. They said a student found the threatening note, a release said. The school was evacuated while officers from several area law enforcement agencies inspected the building with explosive detection canine teams.   William Winchester Elementary, located right next to West Middle School, was also on a modified lockdown, according to spokesperson Brenda Bowers, but that lockdown has since …

My daughter is one of the students who was evacuated from the media center and her class was outside near the dumpsters. Supervisor of Career and Technology Education Receives MSDE Distinguished Service Award

Marjorie Lohnes has been the Supervisor of Career and Technology Education since 1993.

Marjorie Lohnes, Supervisor of Career and Technology Education for Carroll County Public Schools, has been selected as the recipient of the Outstanding Secondary Distinguished Service Award. The award is part of the Career and Technology Education Awards of Excellence program sponsored by the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Career and College Readiness. This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a high level of leadership, vision, and achievement in career and technology education according to a news release.  One award is presented in this category.   Lohnes has served as Supervisor of Career and Technology Education since 1993.  Under her leadership, Carroll County has implemented many rigorous …

Francis Scott Key's Hyson Inducted into Maryland State Wrestling Hall of Fame

Bill Hyson has been the head wrestling coach at Francis Scott Key High School for 34 years.

Bill Hyson, wrestling coach and physical education teacher at Francis Scott Key High School, has been inducted into the Maryland State Wrestling Hall of Fame, according to a Carroll County Board of Education news release. Hyson is a 1973 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School where he was a three sport athlete, participating on the football, baseball, and wrestling teams. He then attended Frostburg State College where he lettered in football and wrestling. Hyson has been the head wrestling coach at his high school alma mater for the past 34 years, establishing the program’s reputation within the state’s wrestling community. Throughout his tenure, Hyson’s teams at Francis Scott Key High School have posted winning records in 30 seasons, …

Commissioner Howard: 'Take a Deep Breath' Before Spending Money on Schools Facilities Study

The Board of Carroll County Commissioners contemplated whether it's worth spending money on a comprehensive facilities study of the school system.

After a lengthy education discussion that jumped around from quality of education to redistricting, funding gaps and facility usage, the Board of Carroll County Commissioners agreed to create a joint task force with the Board of Education to “get on the same page” in terms of finances and a comprehensive facilities study.  “I’d like to recommend that we put together this group to get a common set of numbers and projects we’re talking about and take a deep breathe before we launch into that [hiring a consultant to conduct a schools facilities study],” Commissioner Doug Howard said. Carroll Teachers Receive International Awards of Excellence for Technology Education

Teachers from Liberty High School and Shiloh Middle School received national recognition.

Two teachers from Carroll County Public Schools received international awards of excellence at the 75th Annual International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) Conference held in Columbus, Ohio. These awards are among the highest honors given to Technology and Engineering Education classroom teachers and are presented in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the profession and their students. James Deitrich from Liberty High School received the ITEEA 2013 Teacher Excellence Award. He was one of 26 teachers recognized internationally for his outstanding contributions to the profession and his students. Deitrich has been teaching technology education in Carroll County for more than 16 years.  During this …

Important Dates Model United Nations – Winters Mill High School Winters Mill High School’s Model UN delegation participated in its first ever national event at the Johns Hopkins University Model United Nations Conference in Baltimore in February. Fifteen students from Winters Mill worked with over 1,700 students from all over the country and several international students to draft and approve resolutions on globally relevant topics. They represented the nations of Indonesia and Chile. Winters Mill is the first Model UN group from Carroll County and hopes to grow in numbers and include students from other Carroll high schools.
