A crowd of an estimated 250 people gathered at Carroll Hospital Center on this week to witness the groundbreaking ceremony that marked the beginning of construction on the William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art cancer treatment center, and the Tevis Center for Wellness, an all-new community wellness center. The combined $28 million facilities are the two marquee projects of the “Campaign to Cure and Comfort, Always,” the hospital’s community fundraising initiative. Construction on the new community wellness center is scheduled to begin in February 2013 and is expected to open in September 2014.
Carroll Hospital Center will name its new community wellness center the "Tevis Center for Wellness" in honor of local business owner Jack Tevis and his wife Beth. The Tevis' donated $1 million to the "Campaign to Cure & Comfort, Always", the hospital's $22 million community fundraising initiative. Jack Tevis is the president and CEO of S.H. Tevis & Son, Inc. in Westminster. Social events over the holidays could be one reason the contagious virus spread quickly in December, according to a Carroll Hospital Center representative.
Carroll Hospital Center is seeing more flu cases this year than it did last year at this time, consistent with regional trends, according to a hospital representative. "We're seeing more in the last few weeks than we saw at this time last year," said Elizabeth Fuss, RN and Infection Control/Associate Health manager at Carroll Hospital Center. Fuss said that she expects one reason there is a higher incidence of the Influenza virus is that it hit the community prior to the holidays. "It hit at a time when people generally get together and are more social," Fuss said. Enroll now to be a part of the American Cancer Society's national cancer prevention study.
This evening the American Cancer Society (ACS) will kick off its initiative to sign up 425 Carroll County residents for its national Cancer Prevention Study (CPS-3). Enrollment for the study will take place March 12-16 in four Carroll County locations. The CPS-3 is a historic, nationwide study to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer. The famous CPS-1 established the link between smoking and lung cancer in the 1950s and the more recent CPS-2 findings have linked obesity to cancer risk, according to an ACS news release. Enrollment will take place in Carroll County from March 12 -16. The goal is to enroll 425 participants that week according to a news release. …

Cheyenne Leigh Fitzpatrick was born at 12:51 a.m. on New Year's Day.
Cheyenne Leigh Fitzpatrick was the first baby to be born at Carroll Hospital Center in 2013 and the only baby born at Carroll Hospital Center on New Year's Day. Parents Lisa and Kevin Fitzpatrick of Hampstead welcomed their daughter shortly after midnight. Cheyenne weighed in at six pounds and 15 ounces according to a hospital spokesperson. Cheyenne has an older sister named Savannah.

A man died as a result of the cardiac arrest he suffered while driving, law enforcement officials said.
A car crashed into Carroll Hospital Center Monday morning after a driver went into cardiac arrest and lost control of his vehicle, Carroll County Sheriff’s officials said. The man driving the vehicle, Thomas Carl Skipper JR, 78, died as a result of the medical emergency he suffered, according to the Carroll County Sheriff's Department. No one else was in the car and there were no other injuries, according to police. Police said the hospital sustained minor damage. Carroll Hospital Center officials would not comment Monday on the extent of the damage to the building, but said a county building inspector will assess it.

The Festival of Trees at Carroll Hospital Center benefits Carroll Hospice.
The Festival of Trees and Silent Auction to benefit Carroll Hospice will be on display in the lobby of Carroll Hospital Center through Monday, Dec. 3. Holiday trees have been decorated and donated to the Festival of Trees silent auction. For the sports enthusiast there is a Ravens themed tree and a Steelers themed tree (side by side!), for the animal lover there are pet themed trees. WTTR donated a "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" tree and Random House contributed a tree titled "I Believe in Santa Paws." Trees are on display and up for bid. I want to wear pink gloves and dance through the halls of Carroll Hospital Center after watching this video. I probably won't do that, but I will certainly vote for Carroll Hospital Center in this national competition. The winner will receive a $10,000 donation. From today until Friday, Nov. 2, people can vote for Carroll Hospital Center’s Pink Glove Dance video. The hospital produced the video to enter in Medline’s annual contest to promote breast cancer awareness. The video features hundreds of hospital employees, donning pink surgical gloves while dancing to Katy Perry’s “A Part of Me.” The hospital is one of hundreds nationwide participating in the Medline contest and the winner will be decided based on online votes. Carroll Hospital Center is preparing to undergo significant expansion in the coming years, find out what the man running it all has to say.
John Sernulka has been with Carroll Hospital Center since 1989 and in that time the facility has seen much growth. Sernulka said that Carroll Hospital Center is not only unique in its geographic positioning, but it's also a pioneer, leading the state in some areas. Carroll Hospital Center is embarking on several new initiatives, including a state-of-the-art cancer center and wellness center, a stroke center, robotic surgery and increased cardiac services. A $5 million donation kickstarts a $22 million fundraising initiative that will fund five new projects at Carroll Hospital Center.
The Carroll Hospital Center received its first multi-million dollar gift ever and it intends to use the money for intiaitives that include a new cancer center, a community education center, increased cardiovascular and stroke services and new technology. The Carroll Hospital Center Foundation, the nonprofit organization that oversees the fundraising efforts of Carroll Hospital Center and Carroll Hospice, announced that the Taneytown-based Kahlert Foundation has donated $5 million to the “Campaign to Cure & Comfort, Always,” a new $22 million community fundraising initiative, according to a hospital news release.
