Laura Doolan, an English teacher at Westminster High School, was named Carroll County 2013 Teacher of the Year during the Board of Education’s employee recognition ceremony Thursday evening. According to Janetta Jayman, Supervisor of English and World Languages, “Ms. Doolan is a champion of students, working tirelessly beyond expectations to nurture students’ academic growth and social well-being. Her belief in creating successful learning experiences for all students has been the foundation for her own successful teaching career.” Doolan began her teaching career as a home and substitute teacher for the Carroll County Public School System in 1992. Audience members at the Carroll Biz Challenge live event on Thursday will get to vote for one of five local entrepreneurs vying for a $5,000 prize.
Do you love weighing in on shows like Dancing with the Stars and The Voice? Participate in a live business competition right here in Westminster on Thursday--the audience will get to weigh in on who they think should walk away with the $5,000 prize. The first-ever Carroll Biz Challenge brought together more than 20 local entrepreneurs interested in starting a small business. The field was narrowed to five finalists and those five will pitch their ideas to a live audience Thursday evening at McDaniel College's Decker Auditorium. Carroll County government and the Chamber of Commerce recently honored several businesses in Carroll County.
The Department of Economic Development and the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce recently partnered to recognize successful and growing Carroll businesses. More than 130 people attended an awards program at The Portico of St. John in Westminster earlier this month. Five local entrepreneurs will pitch their business idea to a live audience in an effort to be crowned the first ever Carroll Biz Challenge winner.
Five of 22 entries in the county's first ever Carroll Business Challenge were chosen to be finalists in the local business start-up competition. The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and Carroll County Department of Economic Development partnered with Hometown Startups to launch the Carroll Biz Challenge 2012 in August. The winner of the challenge will walk away with $5,000. Patricia DeLeonardi has been teaching at Liberty High School since 2001.
Patricia DiLeonardi, a social studies teacher at Liberty High School, has been selected as one of seven finalists for the 2012-2013 Maryland Teacher of the Year. DiLeonardi began her teaching career at Liberty High School in 2001 as a substitute teacher. Since 2005, she has been a full time teacher. Her classes include Advance Placement History, Honors US History, Government, Psychology, Issues in American Society, Sociology, Political Science and Teen Leadership. DiLeonardi is a Nationally Board Certified teacher and counts that as her greatest accomplishment in education. The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce introduces Launch Carroll, a new group designed for young professionals.
The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce started Launch Carroll, a new "young professionals group", as a way to engage young people working in local businesses and to bring them together for networking and development activities. “It’s a way to engage some of the up and coming professionals in the area that might not necessarily be attracted to the typical chamber events," Chamber President Mike McMullin said in a news release. "It’s a way to get them together so they can network with one another, talk about business and share ideas." The goals of the group include providing networking opportunities for young professionals, stimulating community involvement and volunteerism and offering professional development activities.
