Five local entrepreneurs pitched their business plans to a panel of judges Thursday night at the first ever Carroll Biz Challenge finale event. Sean Schmidt, owner of Holistic Home Energy Services in Westminster, was chosen as the winner and awarded $5,000. Schmidt founded Holistic Home Energy Services in 2011 to provide home energy audits and home performance contracting. Schmidt is no stranger to the entrepreneurial spirit--his father, Ron Schmidt, started R.M. Schmidt heating and air conditioning services in Westminster 30 years ago. Owners of small businesses in Carroll County, and individuals considering starting a small business, might find some valuable resources at the Carroll Business Path open house on Wednesday. The Carroll Business Path Partners will host the event at the Carroll Community College K Building Conference Center beginning at 8 a.m. to "discuss no-cost and low-cost business support services," according to a news release. Representatives from the Carroll County Dept. of Economic Development, the Miller Center at Carroll Community College, the Carroll County Small Business Development Center and the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce will be present. Young entrepreneur Zach Tomlin said that he chose to venture into the business world because "there is no better way to learn than by actually doing."
Zach Tomlin grew up in Carroll County. He graduated from Westminster High School in 2003 and attended some community college classes. Then in his mid-20's, he opened Tomlin Technology in Westminster, saying "in my experience there is no better way to learn than by actually doing." Tomlin attributes some of his success to having hardworking role models and to growing up in a family of small business owners. He said that starting a business in a small hometown like Carroll County has helped him network and get clients. "I love it here and there was no doubt that I'd run my business here," Tomlin said. Commissioner Howard announced a new initiative at the Get Business Now! Conference that is expected to help small businesses develop and grow in the county.
Carroll County Board of Commissioner President Doug Howard announced the launch of a new initiative called "The Carroll Business Path" at Friday's "Get Business Now!" Small Business Conference at Carroll Community College. More than 300 people attended the conference. The event brought together established business owners and consultants to speak about finding success in starting and running a small business. The "Carroll Business Path" initiative is the collaboration of four organizations integral to business development in Carroll County--Carroll County, the Chamber of Commerce, Carroll Community College and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
