A trip to the mailbox ended with a call to the bomb squad for a Taneytown man Wednesday.
A joint investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is currently underway to determine who placed a pipe bomb inside a mailbox in Taneytown Wednesday, according to a release from the Fire Marshal. The owner of the property in the 3800 block of McMullen Rd., James A. Sandel, found the device at about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday when checking his mail, the Fire Marshal said. Deciding the device was a threat, sheriff's deputies notified the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Bomb technicians rendered the device safe at the scene without injury or property damage, according to the Fire Marshal. The juvenile made four 911 calls with false information about fires and car accidents.
Deputy State Fire Marshals have charged a 14-year-old male juvenile with making multiple false alarm calls to 911, according to a news release. Investigators determined the youth made four false alarm calls with claims of two shed fires and two vehicle crashes in the Finksburg area, according to the release. All four calls were made between Jan. 4 and Feb. 11. The fire marshal said no motive for the calls has been established. The juvenile has been charged with four counts of false alarm, four counts of misuse of a telephone and four counts of making false statements to a public official. Fire deaths throughout Maryland in 2012 dropped nearly a quarter from the previous year to a new record low, state officials said Thursday. According to preliminary data announced by the state fire marshal's office, 52 people died in 2012 of "injuries related to hostile fires." That total is 22 percent down from the 67 fire-related deaths recorded in 2011, and 13 percent down from the 60 deaths reported in 2006 and again in 2008, which were then record lows. State Fire Marshal continues to investigate an explosion in the woods off Will-Anna Drive in Westminster.
The state fire marshal responded to a home on Will-Anna Drive in Westminster Friday morning to investigate remnants from an explosion that happened earlier in the week, according to a statement. Deputy State Fire Marshal Bruce Bouch told Patch that residents of a home on Will-Anna Drive saw an explosion Tuesday and ventured out Friday and found remnants of a device. A fire marshal visited the scene and collected what debris he could find. According to Bouch, those remnants were turned over to the bomb squad with hopes that they will be able to determine what kind of device caused the explosion. Three fires are under investigation.
Deputy State Fire Marshals are seeking help from the public to assist with finding information about three fires in Westminster this weekend, according to a news release. The first fire on July 22 occurred at 101 WTTR Lane and involved a vacant 10’ x 15’ wood frame shed. Damages to the shed are estimated at $5,000 according to the news release. The additional two fires occurring on July 23 and July 24, involved a three-story wood frame barn. The barn was completely destroyed in the second fire, which resulted in approximately $10,000 in damages. Erik Anthony is charged with setting fire to a pick-up truck on May 8.
A Westminster man was charged with setting fire to a vehicle on May 8. Erik Anthony of the 2400 block of West Liberty Road in Westminster, has been charged with second-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning and malicious destruction of property, according to a Maryland State Fire Marshal press release. The release reports that at 2:30 a.m. on May 8, Anthony damaged a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck in the 2700 block of Mystic Woods Court in Mount Airy. Anthony kicked the truck and then started a fire at the vehicle's gas fill spout, according to the release.
