Miani will be a senior at Francis Scott Key High School in the fall.
O’Reilly Miani, a member of the Class of 2013 at Francis Scott Key High School, will be seated as the Student Representative on the Board of Education of Carroll County on Wednesday, June 13. Miani is actively involved in student government and was elected Vice President and President of her Class. She has served as the historian for the Student Government Association, treasurer of the Leo Club, and SGA Representative to the National Honor Society. Miani’s other activities at Francis Scott Key High School include performing in school talent shows and musicals, playing varsity and JV volleyball, and serving as a member of the Debate Team. County championships are on the horizon as the winter sports season wanes.
Winter schedules are starting to catch up with the weather, but there is snow in the forecast for the end of the week. One of the big events this week is the undefeated South Carroll boys basketball traveling to Winters Mill on Tuesday. A victory would keep the Falcons hope alive for tying for the county title. A victory gives South Carroll the title outright. The other big event also involves Winters Mill, but is one the wrestling mat. The Falcons travel to South Carroll for the semifinals of the state dual meet championship. The meet gets underway at 4 pm and tickets are $5. Teams prepare for the last month of regular season competition.
This week we move into the last month of the regular season for winter sports. On the hardwood this week, Winters Mill and Westminster face off in boys and girls basketball on Friday. The boys game is on the Owls court and the girls face-off at Winters Mill. The Winters Mill wrestling team has a big week. On Tuesday they host South Carroll which should go a long way in deciding the county champion. Both squads are 5-0 in the county. On Wednesday, the Falcons travel to Eldersburg to take on Century. The Knights are 4-1 in the county with their lone loss coming against South Carroll. This week in a view of the stats, we look at rebounding. A shoutout to second leading scorers on Falcons and Owls basketball teams.
The Winters Mill wrestling team gets a big test Tuesday as they play host to Liberty. The Lions and Falcons are both undefeated in the county. On the hardwood, the county schedule starts over again on Friday as Westminster and South Carroll match up. The Cavalier boys visit Westminster while the Owl girls go on the road to Winfield. The top scorers on each team get most of the press during the season, this week we give a shoutout to the second leading scorer on each squad. Craig Bowen is notching over 12 points a game for Winters Mill, while Tasha Magruder has over 10 points for the Falcons. In a make-up game Thursday night, the Owls took control of the Eagles early and won the game by 27 points.
The Westminster boys basketball team is feeling confident after their 67-40 win against Francis Scott Key last night. Coach Steve Byrnes is hoping the momentum will carry over tonight as they travel to Manchester Valley. The Owls took the lead against the Eagles early and protected it the entire game. The Eagles, playing without their starting guard and leading scorer, Tyler Zimmerman, stayed close for most of the first half, at times only trailing by a couple baskets. It wasn't until the third quarter that the Owls exploded and really took ownership of the game. Coach Steve Byrnes said that during half time he told his team not to take the foot off the pedal. Carroll County's indoor track and field teams made a strong showing at the annual Frostbite Invite, taking many of the top spots in sprints and jumps.
On Monday, indoor track and field teams from all eight of Carroll County's public high schools traveled to the Frostbite Invite at the PG Sports Complex in Prince George's County. Carroll's girls were a force in the jumping events while Carroll's boys gathered a lot of points in the sprint events. The following high schools also competed in the meet: Archbishop Curley, Dulaney, Kent Island, Loyola (boys), McDonough, Middletown (boys), Mt de Sales (girls), Smithsburg, Thomas Johnson and Williamsport. Out of 15 events that were scored, the Century boys team took 2nd place overall with 68 points, Liberty took 4th place with 43.33 points, North Carroll took 5th place with 37 points and Winters Mill took 6th place with 32 points.
