The Spare Room thrift shop is operated by the Westminster Rescue Mission.

A Food Truck Where Money Isn't Necessary

A woman battles cancer, personal problems to find a new life feeding others and nourishing her soul.

Three years ago, Terry Pitt ran a successful catering business in Howard County. She said her checkbook was fat and her heart was empty. Today, as the founder and director of the nonprofit Stone Soup Foundation in Carroll County, it's the opposite -- her account is empty and her heart is full. Stone Soup Foundation marries Pitt's love for nutritious cooking with her desire to help people. Pitt created the organization in December 2010 with the mission of alleviating hunger in Carroll County. "I want to feed folks in need of healthy, balanced meals, and I want to be able to go to them," Pitt said. Pitt said she had to make some major life changes as a battle against cancer, a deteriorating marriage and a stressful career forced her to take …

County Disbands Homeless Encampment, Displacing Eight

"They had to go. It was a health hazard," said a sheriff's official of the encampment off Rt. 27 in Westminster.

Carroll County agencies collaborated Tuesday to break up a homeless encampment along Rt. 27 at the Rt. 140 overpass, declaring it a health hazard and forcing eight people to leave, officials said. Westminster Mayor Kevin Utz said the encampment, which police say has been there for two years, was overlooked for too long. "I think that we as a government enabled them by allowing them to live there for that period of time," Utz said. "Any other citizen would have had to get permits to do such a thing." Maj. Nicholas Plazio of the sheriff's department said that Commissioner Richard Rothschild received a complaint that the area was being contaminated, which is what initiated the cleanup. Plazio said that there appeared to be eight people living…

Homeless in Carroll County. Yes, It Happens Here.

Patch looks at homelessness in Carroll County as we enter the coldest part of the year.

Homeless, dealing with addiction and trying to care for an infant, Darcell Harris found herself at the women’s shelter in Westminster almost two decades ago.  “They sure know how to structure an unstructured life,” Harris said of the shelter. Harris stayed in the shelter for eight months and not only learned parenting skills, but worked towards sobriety.  Eventually she was able to secure her own housing and employment. Human Service Programs (HSP) supported her through each phase of her progress until eventually the tables turned and Harris was able to volunteer her time giving back to HSP. Now a reading specialist for the Carroll County Public Schools, Harris has created a nonprofit that supports tutoring for kids in the Pennsylvania Ave…

Man Hit by Train, Police Suspect Suicide

The train conductor told police that the man sat up and laid back down on the tracks as the train approached.

Maryland State Police said they believe that a white male hit by a train off Rt. 27 near the Rt. 140 overpass in Westminster Thursday night committed suicide. Around 9 p.m. Thursday night, police say a train conductor and his assistant saw a man lying on the tracks. The two men say that as the train approached, the man appeared to sit up and then laid down again. He was covered by a large brown paper bag. The conductor was unable to stop the train before hitting the man. Lieutenant Jim DeWees of the Maryland State Police said the victim, James Anthony Harless, 59, was dead at the scene. Investigators said they do not believe there was any foul play. "There doesn't appear to be anything suspicious about this," said DeWees. "We are looking …

I knew this man, and I believe he commited suicide. He was speaking very down about himself, saying he wanted to die and that there's no point in him being here. He even sent himself to the hospital and all they did was release him in two days. two weeks later he kills himself. He was a good man, always thought of others. I am angry that he didn't get the help he went and looked for.   more ›
