Liberty HS Alum Killed in Afghanistan

Sara Marie Cullen (nee Knutson) was killed in a training mission in Afghanistan this month.

A 2003 graduate of Liberty High School was killed while on tour in Afghanistan with the US Army in a helicopter crash, The Carroll County Times reports. Sara Marie Cullen, a captain in the Army, and a graduate of Liberty High School and West Point, was killed March 11 during a training mission on board a Black Hawk helicopter, according to a West Point news release. There was no enemy activity in the area, the release stated. After graduating from Liberty High School, Cullen—whose maiden name was Knutson—went on to study law at West Point and graduated in 2007. In November, she married a former Black Hawk pilot, and they were both deployed in 2013 to Afghanistan. "Her mother remembers her as an adventurous, fun loving young woman with a …

Liberty and Century Drama Clubs Win Awards at State Thespian Festival

As the 2013 state champion, Liberty will be performing the play on the national stage in Lincoln, Nebraska in June.

Drama students from Liberty and Century High Schools received numerous awards at the Maryland State Thespian Festival on Jan. 11 and 12. Students competed for scholarships and the opportunity to compete at the National Theatre Festival. Liberty High School students Courtney Jarmush, Christy Czajkowski, and Emily Nupp each received a $32,000 scholarship from Rowan University. Bridget Lindsay won a $1,000 scholarship to the college of her choice in the Technical Scholarship Competition for her set design for “Tarzan.” Six students achieved ratings of superior in their individual events and are among only 15 students in the state who will advance to the national competition: Three of these students – Anne Devine, Christy Czajkowski, and …

Update: Liberty High School Evacuated After Bomb Threat

The school was evacuated to the football field at 9:30 Tuesday morning.

Updated 1:30 p.m. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that it is continuing the investigation into a bomb threat at Liberty High School this morning. At approximately 9:30 a.m., Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Crime Scene Technicians, and the Explosive Detection Canine responded to Liberty High School in Eldersburg for a bomb threat. The threat was a written on a wall of the school, according to the release. Upon their arrival, the building had already been evacuated under the direction of school officials. A thorough search of the building was conducted by Canine Units from both the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police. Liberty's DiLeonardi Selected as Finalist for Maryland Teacher of the Year Award

Patricia DeLeonardi has been teaching at Liberty High School since 2001.

Patricia DiLeonardi, a social studies teacher at Liberty High School, has been selected as one of seven finalists for the 2012-2013 Maryland Teacher of the Year.  DiLeonardi began her teaching career at Liberty High School in 2001 as a substitute teacher. Since 2005, she has been a full time teacher. Her classes include Advance Placement History, Honors US History, Government, Psychology, Issues in American Society, Sociology, Political Science and Teen Leadership. DiLeonardi is a Nationally Board Certified teacher and counts that as her greatest accomplishment in education. According to DiLeonardi, national certification has made her more aware of what she does and how it affects her students.  In addition to her involvement at Liberty …

Liberty Math Teacher Launches eNotebook App

Math teacher Kevin Giffhorn has found a way to make note taking easier.

One local math teacher has found a way to make note taking even easier for his students.  WeLearn Educational Software in Mount Airy, founded by National Board Certified teacher Kevin Giffhorn, launched an eNotebook app Tuesday to help K-12 and college students take and organize notes on the iPad. The app was developed by Giffhorn and is the only app that allows students to easily combine teacher-distributed Word, PowerPoint and PDF files and their own markups and notes to create fully functional virtual notebooks, according to a Carroll County Economic Development press release.  "I thought about how I teach and how students would benefit from using technology in the classroom," said Giffhorn, who heads the math department at Liberty High…

High School Sports: Lions Pin Owls in Wrestling

Liberty opened their county schedule with a win Wednesday.

Liberty High School used five pins to down Westminster High 56-9 Wednesday night. The Lions got pins from Tony Craig, Dan Bowen, Tony Bassani, Joe Kuegler and Luke Yox. Cam Harrison and Tony Retalliata both scored major decisions. "I was very pleased with our performance throughout the lineup. I felt that the guys represented themselves well and worked to improve technique and battle against a young Westminster team," said Liberty coach Mike Flemming. In an early season match up Casey Shea won a decision over Westminster’s Tyler Green 7-3.  Shea drew first points with a takedown and then Green got a reverse to end the first period tied at 2. Whiz Kid: Liberty High School's Ben Castner

Ben Castner is awesome on the lacrosse field and in the classroom. He is a leader and a self-proclaimed "hardworking, fun, relaxed" guy. Patch recognizes him this week as our Whiz Kid.

Student's Name:  Ben Castner Age: 17 School:  Liberty High School (a junior) Accomplishments:  Ben is the captain of Liberty High's It's Academic team, which recently completed second round competition on the television show. Ben also just returned from several days at the Maryland Association of Student Councils at Ocean City, MD, where he attended classes on leadership. He is on the executive council for Liberty High's SGA. County Prep Standings

County championships are on the horizon as the winter sports season wanes.

Winter schedules are starting to catch up with the weather, but there is snow in the forecast for the end of the week. One of the big events this week is the undefeated South Carroll boys basketball traveling to Winters Mill on Tuesday. A victory would keep the Falcons hope alive for tying for the county title. A victory gives South Carroll the title outright. The other big event also involves Winters Mill, but is one the wrestling mat. The Falcons travel to South Carroll for the semifinals of the state dual meet championship. The meet gets underway at 4 pm and tickets are $5. The Falcon boys basketball team has another tough game on Friday as they travel to Century for a match up of the two second place teams in the county. Winters Mill’s…
