A local business owner is promoting the downtown Westminster area through a unique poster project.
The artistic crew at Birdie's Cafe is preparing to launch a project that will not only highlight Main Street businesses, but will also raise money for a local grant program. Sherri Hosfeld Joseph, owner of Birdie's Cafe on Main Street in Westminster, recently renovated the facade of her building. She was able to complete the project with help from a facade grant available through the city of Westminster. She said she wanted to give back to the program that helped her. At the same time, as a Main Street business owner, she said she is always interested in promoting the thriving downtown area. After two full days of road closures, many Main Street businesses are aching for customers.
The sun is shining, parking lot F has some open spaces, and most of the shops on Ellicott City's Main Street, a regional tourism destination, are open for business. “I’d hope that people would come on down and walk down [to lower Main Street],” Sue O’Connor said, standing behind the counter at The Wine Bin. “It’s lovely weather. Go shopping.” Two days after a CSX train derailed in Ellicott City, killing two 19-year-old women and shutting down Main Street at the Baltimore County Border, business is picking up in the Historic District. Slowly. Business at the Wine Bin was not too adversely affected, O'Connor said, because the store's location near Ellicott Mills Road, right next to parking lot F. Other businesses have felt the squeeze. …

Westminster Main Street was packed for the May 29 145th Memorial Day parade of military units, floats, community organizations, antique vehicles, firefighting equipment, re-enactors and marching bands.
People lined Westminster’s Main Street in full force, bright and early for this year’s expanded 145th Memorial Day parade. Main Street was packed for the parade of military units, floats, community organizations, antique vehicles, firefighting equipment, and marching bands. All to the delight of this organizer of this year’s four-day Memorial Day observances, Arnold "Skip" Amass, himself a veteran of the Korean War, and a longstanding member of the Carroll Post 31 American Legion which took over leading the ceremonies in the 1920s. This year’s longer parade began at 9:30 as Amass’ prayers for good weather were answered, especially since participants and spectators endured record temperatures on Memorial Day in 2011 which hit 98-degrees …
