Maryland State Police helicopters were used 271 times for medevac transports in Carroll County in 2012.
Maryland State Police are preparing to accept delivery of six new helicopters at Martin State Airport this week, according to a news release. Maryland State Police spokesperson Greg Shipley said that a Maryland State Police helicopter responded to 271 on-scene medevacs in Carroll County in 2012. The AW139 helicopters are among 10 AgustaWestland helicopters MSP will get to replace its aging fleet of 11. All but one of its current fleet is at least 20 years old. Two helicopters were expected Monday but according to a police spokesman, paperwork at the factory delayed the delivery. Before you know it, 2013 will be here and so will the annual Maryland State Police (MSP) Polar Bear Plunge. Each year, thousands take a quick dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland. The Plungefest, which is open to the public, is set for Jan. 26, 2013, at Sandy Point State Park. Frigid Friday, for participating schools, will take place the day before the Plungefest. To participate in the plunge, you must collect a minimum of $50 in pledges—and if you're younger than 18, you must have a parent or guardian's written consent. It's still early but more than $200,000 has already been raised for Special Olympics Maryland to date, according to the event's website that also has a running countdown until the event. …

State police urge motorists to stay off the roads as much as possible.
Although Maryland State Police is not handing out citations for being on the road, they are strongly discouraging residents from driving. State police spokesperson Greg Shipley warned residents that increasing amount of standing water is a significant hazard to drivers because of the high risk for vehicles to hydroplane. “People don’t realize that you don’t have to be going that fast on the road to hydroplane,” he said. Hydroplaning is caused by water being pushed up to the tires and creating a barrier of water, which decreases tire traction and inhibits drivers’ ability to safely steer their vehicles. No one was seriously injured as eight cars slid on a road made slippery by light rain and a truck's oil leak in Reisterstown Tuesday morning.
Light rain and a box truck’s oil leak apparently caused collisions involving eight vehicles as cars had trouble stopping, spun around and slid off the roadway on Westminster Pike near Mitchell Road Tuesday morning. “All the drivers made the same statement that the roadway was very slippery and they couldn’t stop or steer as they were going down the roadway, which has a fairly steep slope,” said Louise Rogers-Feher, a Baltimore County Police spokeswoman. Maryland drivers who fail to stop and check for pedestrians at nonfunctioning traffic signals will soon face larger fines and points on their licenses.
Maryland drivers have a new set of rules to follow when they come upon a traffic signal that's broken, according to a Maryland State Police press release. The new law, which goes into effect Oct. 1, requires a driver approaching a nonfunctioning traffic signal from any direction at an intersection to stop at a clearly marked stop line, before entering any crosswalk or before entering the intersection. After stopping, the driver must yield to any vehicle or pedestrian in the intersection and remain stopped until it is safe to enter and continue through the intersection. As we gear up for the start of the school year, motorists are reminded to drive safety around school buses.
For 23 million students nationwide, the school day begins and ends with a trip on a school bus. The greatest risk for students is not riding the bus, but approaching or leaving the bus. As we gear up for more than 26,000 Carroll County students to return to school, Maryland State Troopers are urging motorists to take extra care when driving in proximity to school buses. The reality is that motorists pose a greater threat to school bus students than they would ever have to face simply riding on the bus, according to a police report. Police said a 49-year-old Sykesville woman crashed into a utility pole.
On Sunday, June 3, at about 4:22 a.m., Troopers from the Maryland State Police Westminster Barrack responded to the scene of a single vehicle car crash at route 97 at Hoods Mill Rd in Sykesville. According to the state police, In Suk Yoo, 49, of Sykesville was driving a 2011 Toyota Camry north on Maryland Route 97. She traveled over the double yellow line into the southbound lane, then onto the grass shoulder, where the vehicle struck a Baltimore Gas and Electric Utility Pole, police report. Police said Yoo then attempted to back away from the utility pole but was unsuccessful. She attempted to exit the vehicle at which time she succumbed to injuries sustained as in the crash. A man currently in custody in Pennsylvania is being charged in connection with three recent armed robberies in Eldersburg, Sykesville, and Westminster, according to a Maryland State Police press release. Jacob Michael White-Brosenne, 22, of Applejack Road in Littlestown, Pa., is being held at the York County Pennsylvania Detention Center and is awaiting extradition to Maryland to face charges related to the crimes, according to the release. The man sped from police in a stolen truck before fleeing on foot.
Maryland State Police charged a man in a Finksburg burglary and truck theft early Monday following a high speed chase on Route 140 and through a neighborhood in Carroll County, according to a press release. In the early morning hours Monday, a Maryland State trooper on patrol encountered a suspicious vehicle with markings from a local tree service traveling eastbound on Route 140 in Finksburg. The vehicle was a 2007 Ford F250 pulling a trailer loaded with a stump grinder. The trooper pulled the truck over but before the trooper could approach, it accelerated, according to police. A 20-year State Police veteran, Lt. Jim DeWees is now the commander of the Westminster Barrack.
Lieutenant Jim DeWees, 40, is the new commander of the Westminster Maryland State Police Barrack. DeWees replaces former commander Lt. Andrew Winner, who was promoted to captain.
