Three local nonprofits have been awarded United Way grants in 2014.
Three Carroll County nonprofits will receive a combined $104,000 in grant funding from the United Way of Central Maryland in 2014. The United Way's Community Impact Grants focus on advancing education, income and health for impoverished residents -- a population that, according to the United Way, will be among those most impacted by federal sequestration. While Carroll County is ranked in the top 50 wealthiest counties in the U.S., the cost of housing makes it difficult for many low-income earners to stay afloat, according to a United Way news release. In fact, homelessness in the county increased by more than 20 percent during the last two years data has been collected, according to the Point-In-Time Surveys reported by Continuums of …

A Junction, Inc. board member said the organization made efforts to comply with the complicated and frustrating system.
A Carroll County drug abuse prevention and treatment program that closed its doors last year after more than 40 years did so because the organization was unable or unwilling to comply with grant requirements set by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration, according to a state report. Junction, Inc.,'s sudden closing last summer came after a funding dispute with the Carroll County Health Department. According to a Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene report (see attached PDF), the state department launched an investigation into the closing of Junction last July after the county health department and several Junction employees not named in the report accused the organization of mishandling grant funds, as well as misusing …

Sandi Schneider is making a difference one crocheted scarf, or blanket or pair of gloves or socks, at a time. She founded the nonprofit Hugs & Stitches seven years ago and has been making children cozy ever since. Schneider said the group began with just four or five ladies but has grown to a group of nearly 24 knitters. She said the group started while she was teaching a Beginning Crochet class for the Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks. Do you know how to knit or crochet? What's the best piece you've created? Tell us in comments. "I had been making scarves on my own to donate to Shepherd's Staff and when I was teaching the class I told the students about it," Schneider said. "They were happy to make scarves to donate as …

Five years is a long time to learn. This is not a government problem. If the person has insurance, why should a grant/government pay? If the government had allowed this, you guys would be complaining about that. Obviously your default answer is blame government. This was very sad, but all those who live by grants know that you need to follow the rules. I am sorry to see this happen to a …   more ›
