The Friends of the Bennett Cerf Dog Park continue to raise money with hopes of officially welcoming dogs to the park in March. In April, the board of Carroll County Commissioners told Jeff Degitz, director of Carroll County Recreation and Parks, they would approve the use of Bennett Cerf for a dog park if the community raised the $15,000 to construct the park. Laurie Walters, president of the Friends of Bennett Cerf Dog Park, said that the group has raised almost $16,000 for the park, $7,500 of which came from the Carroll Kennel Club. According to Walters, the money is being used to pay for expenses including wood chips to cover the old tennis court and a 5-foot tall chain link fence which will surround the entire dog park area. Servers and bartenders from the Greene Turtle in Westminster will donate their tips to Toys for Tots on Dec. 11.
On Dec. 11, employees at 19 Greene Turtle locations throughout the region, including Westminster, will hold their seventh annual “Tips for Tots” campaign. Employees will combine their gratuities and then hit the stores to purchase gifts for underprivileged children. Corlie Brice, a bartender at The Greene Turtle in Salisbury, Md. came up with the selfless idea for “Tips for Tots” after arriving for her shift one cold December night in 2006 and noticing that a neighboring business had been designated as a “Toys for Tots” drop-off site according to a news release. Tonight there will be a celebration of Junella Spencer's life at the Greene Turtle in Westminster. The celebration will include a silent auction, live music, games and raffles with all the proceeds going to The Shepherd's Staff, where Junella was a long time volunteer. According to the event Facebook page, ten percent of all sales throughout the day will go to The Shepherd's Staff while also helping with the funeral costs. On Tuesday, July 3, The Greene Turtle in Westminster will donate five percent of every bill to the Westminser Fire Department. According to the Westminster Fire Department website, firefighters and paramedics will be at the Greene Turtle thoughout the day to show their appreciation. The fundraiser will run all day.
