Hampstead Neighborhood Hit by Thieves, Vandals Over Weekend

Property was stolen from more than 50 unlocked cars before daylight Sunday morning.

Residents in Hampstead's Northbrook neighborhood awoke Sunday morning to find that more than 50 vehicles had been stolen from and/or vandalized overnight, police said. According to a police report, thieves moved through the Northbrook neighborhood, entering more than 50 unlocked cars parked in driveways along Broadmoor and Glenside Court, Woldholme, Allview and Schaefer Drives.  Thieves removed more than $1,300 worth of portable electronics, change, jewelry and other valuables from unlocked vehicles, police said. Before leaving undetected, the group slashed a car tire, a convertible Jeep top and pushed several vehicles from driveways, one of which traveled across the street where it struck a tree, according to police reports. Murder Charges Dropped, State's Attorney Blames Sheriff

Russell Scott Laderer and Cassandra Glover were headed to trial in the stabbing death of Jeremiah DeMario.

Carroll County State's Attorney Jerry Barnes dismissed charges against a couple accused in the stabbing death of a Hampstead man in September 2010, saying fault lies with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department. The trial was set to begin Monday, March 12. Barnes said in a court document that the sheriff's department made errors in the murder investigation that made prosecution nearly impossible. "...We have reached a point in this case wherein we can no longer legally or ethically overcome the consequences of unconstitutional police procedures utilized in the investigation of these cases, that have resulted in this Court's rightful suppression of the evidence necessary to proceed," Barnes said in a court document. Sewer Overflows into Hampstead's Piney Run Creek

The county said it continues to improve Hampstead's sanitary system.

Early Wednesday morning, Carroll County Bureau of Utilities discovered that an estimated 150,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater overflowed into the Piney Run Creek at the Hampstead Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 4455 North Woods Trail, in Hampstead, according to a news release. Heavy and consistent rain overwhelmed the plant’s capabilities, the release said. Over the past four years, the Bureau of Utilities has worked hard to locate and repair areas of infiltration into Hampstead’s sanitary collection system. Ongoing improvements to Hampstead’s sanitary system continue to be budgeted, the county reported. The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Carroll County Health Department were notified.
