Get your head out of the clouds, and stop daydreaming

That’s basically how I’d response to those who contend that the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in Florida was justified and wasn’t in the least motivated by racial bias or his stereotyping of blacks, in general, nor by those who fit his pre conceived notion of young blacks being prone to engaging in criminal activities.

For the irrefutable facts-namely, that he took it upon himself to disregard a 911 dispatcher’s warning for him to stay in his car and let the police follow-up on his observing, what he viewed as  a suspicious looking, hooded black walking in the neighborhood (where a number of home had been recently burglarized), but choosing as he did instead to follow and confront him-clearly demonstrated his vigilante mind-set at the time.

I can think of no better example of the inherent dangers of racial profiling than that. And even the most doubting of doubting Th0mases would find it hard to believe that he would have reacted as impulsively, with the same adrenalin rush, had it been a white boy he observed carrying a bag  of candy.

In the final analysis, anyone who has the common sense that God gave geese cannot deny (without lying to themselves), that if it was Hernandez who was killed in the ensuing scuffle, Martin would have been arrested by the cops in a heartbeat (rather than waiting as they did 40 days to cuff Zimmerman), and he wouldn’t have stood a ghost of a chance of not being found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, without the possibility of parole.

And as history tells us, in the not so long ago times, he’d been lucky to even make it to prison, what with lynch mobs often taking justice into their own hands beforehand, by dragging him out of jail to be hung from the highest tree branch.

I rest my case, by knowing full well that no more logical arguments I may offer or appeals to people’s sense of right and wrong, will change or alter in the slightest the firmly held conviction of many that justice was served-not made a mockery of-in Zimmerman being exonerated  of committing any crime, whatsoever.

It reminded me of what some legal scholar once said of unequal justice, “it’s no wonder that Lady Justice wears a blindfold, other than for to shield herself from the travesties committed in her name.
