Navy Yard Shooting Victim from Westminster a Retired State Trooper

A Westminster man was one of 12 shooting victims in Monday's Navy Yard shooting spree.

One of the 12 victims killed in Monday's NavyYard shooting in DC was from Westminster, according to news reports.

Westminster resident Richard Michael Ridgell, 52, was one of five Marylanders killed in the rampage, according to CNN. He left behind three daughters.

"I don't want people to remember him as a victim cause he never was in his life, and he never will be. He was strong. I want him to be known as a dad above a victim of a shooting, cause he was a great dad for all of us," his daughter, Megan Ridgell, told CNN.

Ridgell was a Maryland state trooper who retired at the rank of corporal in 2000, according to 11 News.

"He was a really great guy," said Sam Agger, a contractor who does work at the Navy Yard and knew Ridgell.

"It’s a loss, I'm really sad for him and his family," Agger said. "He was a guy who made an impact."

Just after 8 a.m. Monday, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, of Fort Worth, TX, entered the Navy Yard in Washington, DC, and began shooting. More than 3,000 people work at the Navy Yard.

In addition to those killed, eight people were injured in the shooting spree, including Washington Metropolitan Police Officer Scott Williams, who underwent surgery Monday afternoon for gunshot wounds to the lower legs, according to CNN.
